Excerpt from “Aramaic Light on the Beatitudes”
Matthew in his gospel writing gives us the opening scene and background in which Jesus taught the Beatitudes: “Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and when he sat down his disciples came close to him. Then he opened his mouth and was teaching them saying: Blissful are they, the poor in spirit, for theirs is the consulship of the heavens.” Jesus knew that certain states of mind engender bliss. He learned this from observing individuals who conveyed those modes of being. He understood the source of bliss.
